Poets & Poetry
By Monica Hoppen
Poets and Poetry
I think your writing needs to be more positive
People relate more to happy rather than your darkness, darling
So, shall I only write poetry when I'm high?
To hide this girl and this darkness I possess deep down inside?
Giggle my way through life, just to protect the poets of this world
The poets I considered to be my own kind
So backwards are those that would rather read my lies than the reality of me
The real me
My journey of pain
Pain they never felt, pain they would not survive
Poetry, a collection of words, weapons we once internalised
Ashamed I was to say, I cried
If only you the poets that criticized me
Stopped thinking I needed to be more like you and not me
I would let you into my world
Into a world that shaped & created me
The shadows I hide in are not to be feared, when you realize
Those shadows you call darkness, are what survived me
If darkness is all you see when you look at me
Then perhaps you yourself are out of touch with reality
There are only roses and love in a small minority
Did I dismiss your heart?
Did I make you feel like you should quit your mind?
The way I was treated, but as a mere child
Loveless….
Still one thing I may never find
Why are you all so terrified?
To blind to see that I am not darkness, like you all assumed
I was just a poet needing to voice all my minds thoughts
From these cards I was dealt
My pen and a message to send
Yet you re-affirmed for me, “Poets Writing Poetry” do not support each other
Another thought
Just a dream
Not this reality
