Who Shelley was
Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was expelled from Oxford for co-writing a pamphlet defending atheism, and spent his adult life in controversy, debt and exile. He drowned in a storm off the Italian coast a month before turning thirty, leaving work that his wife, Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, edited and championed.
He matters as the most idealistic of the Romantics, and as a master of forms: sonnet, ode, terza rima, blank verse drama, all handled at full imaginative pressure.
