Thomas Hardy
Quick answer: Thomas Hardy craft guide for poets: invented stanza shapes, useful awkwardness and the irony of circumstance, plus which Hardy poems to read first.
Hardy published his first poetry collection at fifty-eight, after abandoning novels, and then wrote verse for three more decades. The late start matters: these are poems by someone with a lifetime of material and no interest in sounding fashionable. Their deliberate awkwardness, odd words, knotty rhythms, home-made stanzas, influenced Auden, Larkin and much of the plain-dealing British poetry that followed.
He is the poet to study when your work has become too smooth. Hardy shows how a roughened surface can signal honesty, and how form can be invented fresh for every poem rather than taken off the shelf.
Who Hardy was
Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) trained as an architect in Dorset before fame as the novelist of Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. Hostile reactions to Jude helped push him to poetry, his first love; Wessex Poems appeared in 1898, and seven further collections followed.
The death of his estranged first wife Emma in 1912 produced his finest work, the elegies known as Poems of 1912-13, in which grief and guilt are examined with unsparing honesty.
The signature moves
Hardy's craft hides inside its apparent clumsiness.
What you can learn from him
Design a stanza before writing: choose a pattern of line lengths and rhymes that mimics your subject, a limping shape for regret, a long-then-cut-short shape for interruption, then obey it strictly. Invented form, strictly kept, reads as mastery rather than mess.
Let one strange word stand in each poem where a smooth one would do; the snag catches the reader's attention exactly where you want it. And structure a narrative poem around bad timing rather than bad people. Hardy knew that chance makes crueller drama than villainy, and it spares you melodrama.
Where to start reading
These five show the range.
What poets can take from this
- Invent a stanza shape for your subject and keep it for the whole poem.
- Allow one deliberately odd word per poem and place it where it snags.
- Build a story poem around timing, not villainy.
- Write a return-visit poem: same place, changed speaker, and measure the gap.
- Pair bleak content with a strict, almost songlike form and let them argue.
Try it yourself
Write a poem about revisiting a place after many years, using a stanza shape you invent, in which one line per stanza is noticeably shorter, like a step that gives way.
Questions
Was Hardy a poet or a novelist first?
He wrote poetry from youth but earned his living by novels for twenty-five years. After Jude the Obscure's hostile reception in 1895 he returned to poetry exclusively, publishing eight collections from 1898 until his death in 1928.
What are the Poems of 1912-13?
A sequence of elegies Hardy wrote after his first wife Emma died suddenly in 1912. They revisit their courtship in Cornwall and their long estrangement, and are widely considered among the greatest elegies in English.
