He laid her down by a canal and, undressing her, discovered she had been dead all along: cold flesh, thanda gosht, in his hands. Kulwant Kaur puts her hand on his, and the story ends on the fact that it is colder than ice. Whether she understands or forgives, Manto does not say.

Exam readings name the dehumanising effect of communal violence and the fusion of rape and murder in 1947. The story also belongs to the small group of Manto works told from the perpetrator's side; Sharifan is another.
The sharper observation is the mirroring of bodies. The title names the corpse, but by the last line it describes Ishar Singh. Kulwant Kaur's hand on his cold hand repeats his hand on the girl's cold body: the killer has become the thing he touched.
The craft
The turn is the stab wound. Only after the kirpan goes in does the confession come, so violence is the price of speech, and it arrives in gasped sentences rather than narrated flashback. The earlier lovemaking, with its slang and card metaphor, establishes the couple's physical language so that Ishar Singh's failure needs no explanation.
The technique worth stealing is the deferred title. Manto delivers the phrase inside the confession, then repeats the idea wordlessly in the final image. Paying a title off twice, once in speech and once in gesture, works for any story with a strong title.
