- Commonwealth Short Story Prize: free and open to eligible citizens of Commonwealth countries. As checked on 16 September 2026, the prize is closed and the opening of the 2027 prize is postponed until January 2027 while its processes, entry rules and submission guidelines are reviewed. - Furious Fiction, from the Australian Writers' Centre: a free 500-word challenge, now run quarterly. The prompt drops, you get a weekend, winners take cash and publication. The best free deadline-pressure exercise going, four times a year.
- On The Premises: free themed contests a few times a year, with cash prizes and careful editorial standards. The theme is strict, which is half the value; it forces a story you would not otherwise have written.
What free actually costs
A free contest with thousands of entrants can afford to answer only its shortlist, and that is what nearly all of them do. Enter three, hear nothing from any of them, and you have spent months without learning whether the problem was your opening, your ending or nothing at all. That silence is the real price of free, and it is worth knowing you are paying it.
Writory: an optional paid contest
Writory's Short Story Contest is not free. Entry is ₹199 in India or $8 internationally. Every entrant receives blind judging against a published rubric, a certificate and all five marks out of 100. The first contest runs from 1 September 2026 to 25 November 2026 at 11:59 PM IST, with results and certificates on 30 November 2026. Monthly rounds follow the debut: entries close on the 25th and results arrive on the 30th.

Common questions
How do I spot a 'free' contest that isn't really free?
Read the rights clause and the results page. Walk away if entering transfers rights to all submissions, if seeing results or feedback costs money, or if the prize is publication in an anthology you are then invited to buy. Every contest listed here passes those checks.
Can I enter Writory free every month?
No. Free entry is earned: win a month, or hold the Seasoned Quill badge by entering three consecutive months, and your next entry is free. There is no open free entry, and earned entries receive the same judging, score and certificate as any other.
My story is already on my blog or Wattpad. Can I still enter it?
It depends on the organiser. The Commonwealth Foundation's FAQ, checked on 16 September 2026, requires unpublished work but explicitly makes an exception for personal websites. Do not assume that this also covers Wattpad or other platforms. Commonwealth is reviewing its 2027 rules, so check the final rules when entries reopen and ask the organiser if your publication history is unclear.
