The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. Roderick Usher summons an old friend to a house whose walls have a crack in them, and his twin sister Madeline drifts through the rooms dying of something no doctor can name. They bury her in a vault below the house, and the storm comes up.
The Doll's House by Katherine Mansfield. Three Burnell sisters receive a doll's house and show it to the school two girls at a time; two Kelvey sisters, the washerwoman's daughters, are never asked. The youngest of each pair is the one who acts.
The Home-coming by Rabindranath Tagore. Phatik and his younger brother Makhan quarrel over a log by the river, and Phatik's roughness gets him sent to the city. Makhan stays home.
The Adventure of the Speckled Band by Arthur Conan Doyle. Helen Stoner comes to Baker Street because she has been moved into the bedroom where her twin sister died two years earlier, of no visible cause, after hearing a low whistle in the night. The bell-rope in that room is a dummy.
My Uncle Jules by Guy de Maupassant. A poor Le Havre family lives on the legend of the father's brother Jules, who left in disgrace and wrote from America that he was making his fortune. On a boat to Jersey the father buys oysters from a ragged old sailor and looks at his face.
