Antiquity got there first with the Batrachomyomachia, a battle of frogs and mice once attributed to Homer. Boileau's 'Le Lutrin' turned a quarrel over a church lectern into warfare; Dryden and Pope perfected the English line of the tradition; Pope's later 'Dunciad' expanded mockery into cultural apocalypse. Byron's Don Juan carries the manner into the nineteenth century with a looser, chattier irony.
